A NEW EARTH

ASSIGNMENT:

Write a narrative about a city-hall tower and then construct it.

PROJECT GOAL:

An atypical city hall tower that centers around reverence to one's community and homeland. The circumambulatory itinerary lends to a feeling of societal upwards progression that wraps around the objects that the community hold so sacred, which are held within the building's core.

PROGRAM:

To be constructed partially out of cast concrete, including these 5 spaces - from largest to smallest:
1. Exhibition
2. Public Gathering
3. Private Gathering
4. Office for manager/leader
5. A space of our choosing

PROCESS:

- Create process 3D models to extract ideas
- Cast the concrete once design is nearly finalized and complete the final design + model.

RESULTED NARRATIVE:

There is no leader in this community. Rather, what keeps this society in balance is their reverence to the Earth.

Instead of a manager’s office, the smallest room remains empty, occupied by space. It is a room for anyone to visit, regardless of class, to contemplate divinity in silence.

Directly above is the exhibition space. It suspends a large crystal which the society holds dear, as it is part of the larger whole they so deeply admire.

Moreover, the private gathering connects to the exhibition space which allows for the remembrance of respect and reverence during crucial discussions about the well-being of the collective.

Finally, the tower is open to expansion and development with potential for residential and/or educational occupation above, and more spaces below.
